From Greek Ἅιδης (Haides), derived from ἀϊδής (aides), meaning “unseen,” Hades is the dark god of the underworld in Greek mythology, and the underworld itself was also called Hades. His brothers were Zeus and Poseidon, and his wife was Persephone, whom he had abducted.
