Haider is a common transliteration of the Arabic masculine name Ḥaydar, meaning “lion.” The lion image traditionally conveys courage and strength. Haydar became especially significant as an epithet of Ali ibn Abi Talib, cousin and son-in-law of Muhammad and the first Imam in Shia Islam. Spellings include Haider, Haydar, and Hyder. Notable bearers include Iraqi politician Haider al-Abadi and Pakistani actor and musician Haider Mustehsan.
