Haruna has distinct Japanese and West African uses. In Japanese it is usually feminine, and meaning depends on kanji, such as 春菜, “spring greens,” or 遥奈, combining “distant” with a phonetic character; many other combinations occur. In Hausa and related Muslim communities, Haruna is a masculine form of Aaron, from Hebrew Aharon, whose meaning is uncertain. Notable bearers include Japanese tennis player Haruna Arakawa and Nigerian musician Haruna Ishola.
