Meaning and history
Hazel comes from the English word hazel, referring to the tree or the light brown color, and is ultimately derived from Old English hæsel. It was coined as a given name in the 19th century and quickly became popular, reaching 18th place for girls in the United States by 1897. Although it fell out of fashion in the second half of the 20th century, it has since returned to use.

Hazel has made a dramatic comeback. After first appearing in the US records in 1880, it fell to #945 by 1975, before climbing to #21 in 2025. Its highest annual birth count came in 1918, with 7,615 births.
