Meaning and history
Hedvig is a Scandinavian form of Hedwig. The Germanic name combines hadu, “battle” or “combat,” with wig, also associated with battle, producing a strongly martial compound. Saint Hedwig of Silesia and Saint Hedwig of Poland helped spread the name in medieval Christian Europe. Notable bearers include Swedish football goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl and Swedish poet Hedvig Charlotta Nordenflycht. Hedvika and Jadwiga are related Czech and Polish forms.
