Herbert derives from Germanic elements heri, “army,” and beraht, “bright” or “famous,” giving the traditional interpretation “bright army” or “famous warrior.” The name reached the Iberian world through European Christian and aristocratic naming traditions. Notable bearers include Paraguayan-Spanish football manager Heriberto Herrera and Mexican boxer Heriberto Ruiz. Herberto is a related Portuguese form.
