Spanish and Portuguese form of a Visigothic name combining ermen "whole, entire" and gild "sacrifice, value." Saint Hermenegild (died 585), a Visigothic prince who rebelled against his Arian father and was executed for his Catholic faith, is venerated as a martyr.
