Meaning and history

Hezekiah comes from the Hebrew name חִזְקִיָהוּ (Ḥizqiyahu), meaning “Yahweh strengthens,” formed from חָזַק (ḥazaq), “to strengthen,” and יָהּ (yah), a reference to the Hebrew God. The name was borne by a powerful king of Judah who reigned in the 8th and 7th centuries BC, and in the Old Testament it is also the name of an ancestor of the prophet Zephaniah.
