Of uncertain meaning and of Iroquois origin, possibly meaning “he who combs,” Hiawatha was the name of a Mohawk or Onondaga leader credited with founding the Iroquois Confederacy around the 15th century; he later became the subject of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s fictionalized 1855 poem.
