Meaning and history
Hildred is an English name used historically for both sexes. It derives from Old English elements hild, “battle,” and ræd, “counsel” or “advice,” giving a sense such as “battle counsel.” It is distinct from the similar Mildred, although the names have sometimes influenced one another in modern spelling. A notable bearer was American anthropologist Hildred Geertz, known for research on kinship and family life in Indonesia. Modern use is uncommon.
