Meaning and history
Hubert means “bright heart,” from the Old German elements hugu, meaning “mind, thought, spirit,” and beraht, meaning “bright.” Saint Hubert, an 8th-century bishop of Maastricht, is regarded as the patron saint of hunters. The Normans introduced the name to England, where it replaced the Old English cognate Hygebeorht. It fell out of use in the Middle Ages but was revived in the 19th century.
