Hywel

Hywel is a traditional Welsh masculine name, from an Old Welsh form usually interpreted as “eminent” or “conspicuous,” although its earliest etymology is not entirely certain. Its greatest historical bearer was Hywel Dda, or Hywel the Good, a tenth-century Welsh ruler associated with the codification of medieval Welsh law. Notable modern bearers include Welsh actor Hywel Bennett and Welsh rugby union player Hywel Stoddart. The name retains a characteristically Welsh spelling and pronunciation.
