Meaning and history

Ichabod is a Hebrew name meaning “no glory,” derived from אִי (ʾi), “not,” and כָּבַד (kavaḏ), “to be glorious.” In the Old Testament, it is the name of the grandson of Eli and the son of Phinehas, given because his mother lamented that “the glory has departed from Israel” (1 Samuel 4:21). Washington Irving later used the name for Ichabod Crane, the central character in his 1820 short story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
