Meaning and history
Ilithyia is a variant spelling of Eileithyia, the ancient Greek goddess of childbirth and labour pains. Her name appears in early Greek poetry and in cult worship, especially on Crete, but its linguistic origin is uncertain and may predate Greek. She could be invoked either to assist or delay a birth, reflecting the dangers surrounding childbirth in antiquity. The spelling Ilithyia is familiar from Latinized and modern retellings; elaborate literal translations are not securely established.
