Meaning and history
This name comes from India, the country name ultimately derived from the Indus River, whose name in turn comes from Sanskrit सिन्धु (Sindhu), meaning “body of trembling water, river.” India Wilkes is also a character in Margaret Mitchell’s 1936 novel Gone with the Wind.
