Iola is a feminine name often treated as a variant of the Greek mythological name Iole, which is traditionally associated with ion, “violet.” Its exact formation in modern English is not fully certain, and it may sometimes have developed independently as a creative name. Iole was a princess loved by Heracles, giving the name a classical association. A notable bearer was American lyricist Iola Brubeck, who collaborated extensively with her husband, jazz musician Dave Brubeck.
