Ion is the Romanian and Basque form of John, ultimately from Hebrew Yohanan, meaning “God is gracious.” It is one of the most traditional masculine names in Romania and Moldova. Romanian writers Ion Creangă and Ion Luca Caragiale are among its most celebrated bearers.
