Iphigenia is the Latinized form of the ancient Greek name Iphigeneia. Its elements are often interpreted as “strong-born” or “of mighty birth,” though nuances of the compound are debated. In Greek mythology, she is the daughter of Agamemnon whom he must sacrifice at Aulis so the Greek fleet can sail to Troy; some versions say Artemis rescues her.
