Meaning and history
Isaiah comes from the Hebrew name יְשַׁעְיָהוּ (Yeshaʿyahu), meaning “Yahweh is salvation,” from יָשַׁע (yashaʿ) “to save” and יָהּ (yah), a name for the Hebrew God. In the Old Testament, Isaiah is one of the four major prophets and is traditionally regarded as the author of the Book of Isaiah; he was from Jerusalem and probably lived in the 8th century BC, when Assyria threatened the Kingdom of Judah. As an English Christian name, Isaiah came into use after the Protestant Reformation.

Isaiah has unusual staying power. It appears in the US records as early as 1880 and still ranks #57 for boys in 2025. Its highest annual birth count came in 2006, with 10,459 births.
