Meaning and history
Ishaan is a modern transcription of Sanskrit Īśāna, meaning “lord,” “ruler,” or “master.” Īśāna is an epithet of the Hindu god Shiva and is also associated with the northeast direction in Hindu cosmology. The spelling Ishaan commonly marks the long initial vowel in English transliteration. Claims that it simply means “the sun” do not capture its primary Sanskrit history.
