Possibly meaning “rainbow lady,” from Classic Maya ix “lady” and chel “rainbow,” Ixchel was a Maya goddess associated with the earth, jaguars, medicine, and childbirth. She was often depicted with a snake in her hair and crossbones embroidered on her skirt.
