Johanna is the Latin form of Greek Ioanna, ultimately from Hebrew Yehochanan, meaning “Yahweh is gracious.” The name family has strong Christian associations through several New Testament figures named Joanna and through later saints. Jaana is used independently rather than merely as a nickname. Notable bearers include Finnish politician Jaana Pelkonen and Finnish singer Jaana Lammi.
