Jacopo is an Italian form of Jacob. Jacob comes from Hebrew Yaʿaqov; the biblical narrative associates it with the word for “heel” because Jacob was born holding his twin Esau’s heel, while the traditional interpretation “supplanter” reflects a related wordplay. In Genesis, Jacob is renamed Israel and becomes ancestor of the twelve tribes. Notable bearers include Renaissance painter Jacopo Tintoretto and architect Jacopo Sansovino, both central figures in Venetian art.
