Jade is a name taken from the precious stone commonly used in carvings. It comes from the Spanish (piedra de) ijada, meaning “(stone of the) flank,” referring to the former belief that jade could cure renal colic. As a given name, it became widely used in the 1970s and was originally unisex, though it is now used mainly for girls.
