JaMarcus is a modern African American masculine name, generally formed from the productive prefix Ja- and the established name Marcus. Marcus is an ancient Roman name traditionally associated with Mars, the Roman god of war, although its exact etymology is uncertain. JaMarcus is therefore a modern construction rather than an ancient Latin compound with a fixed translation. The best-known bearer is American football quarterback JaMarcus Russell, selected first overall in the 2007 NFL draft.
