Meaning and history
Jamesina is a Scottish and English feminine form of James. James is the English form of Jacob, from Hebrew Yaʿaqov. Genesis associates the name with “heel,” because Jacob holds Esau’s heel at birth, and later with the idea of supplanting. The suffix -ina was historically used to create feminine forms in Scotland. Notable bearers include Scottish suffragist and physician Jamesina Anderson and Scottish social reformer Jamesina McLellan.
