Jared comes from the Hebrew name יָרֶד (Yareḏ) or יֶרֶד (Yereḏ), meaning “descent,” and is the name of a close descendant of Adam in the Old Testament. It has been used as an English name since the Protestant Reformation and became more popular in the 1960s through the character Jarrod Barkley on the television series The Big Valley.
