Meaning and history
Jasmine is an English name taken from the word for the climbing plant with fragrant flowers used in perfumes, ultimately derived through Arabic from Persian یاسمین (yāsamīn), which is also used as a Persian name. In the United States, it grew steadily in popularity from the 1970s, especially among African Americans, and peaked in the early 1990s soon after the release of Disney’s animated film Aladdin (1992), which featured a princess with this name.
