French compound name honoring John the Baptist, combining Jean (John) and Baptiste ("the Baptist"). It was the birth name of the playwright Molière (Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, 1622-1673) and of the composer Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-1687), who together shaped French theater and music at the court of Louis XIV.
