Jewel is a given name partly derived from the English word for a precious stone, ultimately from Old French jouel, possibly related to jeu meaning “game.” It also comes partly from the surname Jewel or Jewell, a derivative of the Breton name Judicaël, and was sometimes chosen in honor of the 16th-century Bishop of Salisbury John Jewel. The name has been used as a given name since the 19th century.
