It is probably related to the masculine name Jimeno, but the deeper origin—possibly Basque or another pre-Romance source—is uncertain, so confident literal meanings are unreliable. Jimena Díaz, wife of the Castilian warrior Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, known as El Cid, gave the name medieval historical significance.
