Contracted form of Jehoiachin or Jehoiakim. In the apocryphal Gospel of James, Saint Joachim is named as the husband of Saint Anne and the father of the Virgin Mary, and his popularity in the Middle Ages led to the name’s widespread use in Christian Europe, though it was never common in England.
