Meaning and history
Joakim is a Scandinavian, Finnish, and Balkan form of Joachim. It comes from the Hebrew name Yehoyaqim, meaning “Yahweh establishes” or “Yahweh raises up.” In Christian tradition, Joachim is the name given to the father of the Virgin Mary in the apocryphal Protoevangelium of James, which helped spread the name across Europe. Notable bearers include Swedish musician Joakim Brodén of Sabaton and Danish footballer Joakim Mæhle.
