Meaning and history
Joël comes from the Hebrew Yoʾel, meaning "Yahweh is God," with both elements referring to the Hebrew God. Joel is one of the twelve minor prophets of the Old Testament and the attributed author of the Book of Joel, which describes a plague of locusts. The name began to be used by Christians in England after the Protestant Reformation.
