Meaning and history

Jonas is the Greek and Latin form of the biblical name Jonah, from a Hebrew word meaning "dove." In the Book of Jonah, the prophet tries to flee a divine command, is swallowed by a great fish during a storm and emerges alive three days later before completing his mission to Nineveh. The form Jonas is widely used across Europe; notable bearers include polio-vaccine developer Jonas Salk and German tenor Jonas Kaufmann.
