Anglicized form of Giulietta or Juliette, this spelling was used for Romeo’s ill-fated lover in William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet (1596), a play based on earlier Italian tales such as Luigi Da Porto’s Giulietta e Romeo (1524).
