Kanta has distinct Indian and Japanese uses. In Sanskrit, kāntā is a feminine form meaning “beloved,” “beautiful,” “radiant,” or “desired,” while kānta can also be masculine in compounds and epithets. In Japanese, Kanta is usually masculine and its meaning depends entirely on the kanji chosen. The traditions are unrelated. Because romanization alone cannot settle the source, cultural context is essential. Reliable internationally prominent exact-name bearers are limited.
