Meaning and history
Kanya has several Asian uses. In Sanskrit and many Indian languages, kanyā means “girl,” “maiden,” or “daughter” and appears in religious and astrological vocabulary. In Thai, Kanya can represent a feminine name or element derived from Pali and Sanskrit, while Japanese uses may depend on kanji. These traditions overlap historically but are not identical in modern use. Notable bearers include British business executive Kanya King, founder of the MOBO Awards.
