Meaning and history
Katrine is a Danish, Norwegian, German, and French form of Katherine. Katherine derives from Greek Aikaterine, whose original etymology is uncertain; later association with Greek katharos, “pure,” strongly influenced the traditional meaning and spelling. Saints including Catherine of Alexandria gave the name extensive Christian significance. Notable bearers include Norwegian handball goalkeeper Katrine Lunde and Danish classical pianist Katrine Gislinge. Katrine is also used in place names such as Loch Katrine in Scotland.
