The surname comes from a Lincolnshire place name, probably meaning “Cenel’s island” or “Cenel’s dry ground in marshland,” from an Old English personal name and ēg, “island.” The exact place-name analysis is not completely certain. A notable bearer is American musician Kelcey Ayer, a member of the band Local Natives. Kelsey remains the standard spelling.
