Meaning and history

Kévin is the Anglicized form of Irish Caoimhín, meaning "beloved birth," from Old Irish Cóemgein and the elements cóem, "dear, beloved, gentle," and gein, "birth." Saint Caoimhín founded a monastery at Glendalough in the 6th century and is the patron saint of Dublin. The name spread beyond Ireland in the English-speaking world during the mid-20th century and became popular elsewhere in Europe later in the century. Familiar bearers include actors Kevin Costner and Kevin Bacon, while Kevin McCallister is a character in the 1990 comedy Home Alone.
