Meaning and history

From a title used in George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, first published in 1996, and its television adaptation Game of Thrones (2011–2019), this is the feminine form of the Dothraki title khal, meaning “warlord.” In the series, Daenerys Targaryen receives the title after marrying Khal Drogo.
