Kyrie is a modern English name drawn from the Greek Christian liturgical phrase Kyrie eleison, meaning “Lord, have mercy.” Greek kyrie is the vocative form of kyrios, “lord.” The phrase has been sung for centuries in Eastern and Western Christian worship, giving the name a strong religious and musical association. Kyrie is used for more than one gender in English. American basketball player Kyrie Irving is its best-known real-life bearer.
