Meaning and history
Lance comes from the Germanic name Lanzo, originally a short form of names beginning with the Old Frankish or Old Saxon element land, from Old High German lant meaning “land” (Proto-Germanic * landą). In the Middle Ages, it came to be associated with Old French lance meaning “spear, lance.” A notable bearer is the American cyclist Lance Armstrong (1971–).
