Meaning and history
Lara is a Russian short form of Larisa that spread internationally after the character Lara Antipova appeared in Boris Pasternak's novel Doctor Zhivago and its 1965 film adaptation. The spelling also coincides with the name of a Roman mythological nymph, though the modern European name is usually traced through Larisa. Notable bearers include Belgian-Canadian singer Lara Fabian and fictional adventurer Lara Croft.
