Laurencia is a feminine form of Laurentius or Laurence. Laurentius was a Roman name meaning “from Laurentum,” an ancient city in Latium whose own name may have been associated with laurel, though that connection is not certain. Saint Lawrence, a third-century Roman martyr, gave the name family lasting Christian importance. Laurencia is used in Spanish and other European languages and is also the heroine of Lope de Vega’s seventeenth-century play Fuenteovejuna.
