The diminutive ending adds affection without changing the underlying meaning. The name also appears in opera, including Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, but its real history predates that character. Notable bearers include Italian actor Lauretta Masiero and American aviator and women’s aviation advocate Lauretta Schimmoler.
