Lawrence is a variant of Laurence and is now the more common spelling in the English-speaking world, probably because it is also the usual form of the surname. That surname was borne by the author and poet D. H. Lawrence (1885–1930) and the revolutionary T. E. Lawrence (1888–1935), better known as Lawrence of Arabia.
