Meaning and history
Latinized form of the Greek name Λέανδρος (Leandros), composed of λέων (leon), meaning “lion,” and ἀνήρ (aner), meaning “man” (genitive ἀνδρός). In Greek legend, Leander was Hero’s lover; he swam across the Hellespont to see her each night, but was drowned in a storm on one crossing, and Hero then threw herself into the water and died.
