Lemuel is a Hebrew name meaning “for God,” formed from לְמוֹ (lemo) and אֵל (ʾel), meaning “God.” It appears briefly in Proverbs in the Old Testament as the name of a king, in the Book of Mormon as the rebellious son of Lehi and Sariah, and in Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels (1726) as the name of the hero.
